My apologies for no posts this week

It's been a hectic last few days and I have not had time or energy to post. I started playing around with new layouts over the weekend as you can tell. Obviously there are still a few kinks to work out and it will probably all change very soon, maybe before you even read this posting.

Gay Republicans draw support

An unlikely sponsor at this year's annual conservative conference is hoping to not only promote the issues that set it apart from many Republicans, but also draw attention to the beliefs they share.

The group is called GOProud -- a name that combines GOP and gay pride. So far, the group is getting a mixed response at the Conservative Political Action Conference.

GOProud was founded by former members of the Log Cabin Republicans, a gay and lesbian Republican grass-roots organization.

GOProud has a booth at CPAC just two spaces away from the exhibition for the National Organization for Marriage, which wants the government to define marriage as between a man and a woman.

The organizations obviously see social issues differently.

"It's the ultimate Washington power grab to say let's have a federal constitutional amendment that will federalize the question of marriage," said GOProud chairman Christopher Barron.

Through speaking at the event, exhibiting a booth and co-sponsoring the conference, GOProud hopes to highlight the views it has in common with other Republicans -- limited government and fiscal responsibility.

The college baseball season begins today

Yes, and as always I am glad for the first pitch of the season. The Gamecocks play Duquesne at 2:00 pm central time today. While the 'Cocks lost a number of great players from last year's team, the pitching staff this year is supposed to be among the best Coach Tanner has had at Carolina. It would be great for the Gamecocks to return to the College World Series having not been in 5 or 6 years now. They always make the regionals but just haven't been able to clear that final hurdle. But IF the pitching can come through as anticipated, this could be the year. The SEC coaches have picked Carolina to finish second in the East behind Florida, with LSU expected to win the conference again this year and head back to Omaha.

Thank goodness it's over -- and now Lent is in progress

This is a friend's mother who apparently was as tired of Joe Cain Day and Mardi Gras as I was before it was all over on Tuesday. Now that we're in Lent, it's truly time to kick in some good habits for a change -- better eating, less drinking, more spiritual growth. It's also nearing Springtime in Mobile. Cherry trees and jonquils are already in full bloom. The weather is heating up with highs in the 60s today.

Now if I just didn't have to deal with taking the Mardi Gras tree down.

Happy Lundi Gras 2010

Well of course the postings to the blog have been a little sparse over the past few days due to the celebration of Mardi Gras in Mobile. Yesterday was Joe Cain Day. In other words, it was the people's day. And it's that one day during the year you never know what or who you may see on the streets of Downtown Mobile. Rather than post embarrassing photos of my friends yet, I am posting one of me (below) posing with Joe Cain's Merry Floozies during ceremonies yesterday at Joe Cain's grave site in Church Street Cemetery. Watch for more pictures later this week.

How Gay Uncles Pass Down Genes

Maybe everyone could use a gay uncle: A new study found that homosexual men may be predisposed to nurture their nieces and nephews as a way of helping to ensure their own genes get passed down to the next generation.

Research has confirmed that male homosexuality is at least partly hereditary – it tends to cluster in families, and identical twin brothers of gay men are more likely to be gay than fraternal twin brothers, who do not share identical DNA.

But scientists have been puzzled about how these genes are perpetuated, since homosexual males are less likely to reproduce than straight males. Basically, why haven't gay people gone extinct?

One idea is called the "kin selection hypothesis." Perhaps gay men are biologically predisposed to help raise the offspring of their siblings and other relatives.

"Maybe what's happening is they're helping their kin reproduce more by just being altruistic towards kin," said evolutionary psychologist Paul Vasey of the University of Lethbridge in Canada. "Kin therefore pass on more of the genes which they would share with their homosexual relatives."
